Free Range Egg Prices
I did some research today and tried to find out what the current price for half a dozen large free range eggs in the UK.
Prices on taken from retailers websites: 12pm, 19th June 2008
What are free range eggs?
Hens that produces free-range eggs must have had, during at least half their lifetime, continuous daytime access to open-air runs.
When they are housed indoors a total of 12 birds per square metre is allowed. The maximum stock size for free-range hens is 2,500 birds per hectare.
About 70 per cent of the 29 million egg-laying chickens in the UK are housed in battery cages.
Research carried out by the RSPCA (which is campaigning for all cage systems to be banned) says that chickens prevented from behaving naturally – being able to scratch, dust bathe and forage for food – suffer stress as well as health problems such as osteoporosis. this is a clear reason to buy Free Range Eggs.
Free Range Egg production on a large scale can be a very profitalbe venture. If you have lots of spare land you could do a lot worse than to invest in Free Range Egg production. Many believe it is an expading market with great growth projections over the next 5 years - better than shares..?
